Why We Love Independent Eyewear
At Look + See Vision Care, we pride ourselves on having the majority of our glasses represented by independent eyewear companies. As a small, locally owned optometrist practice in South Austin’s 78704, we love being surrounded by other local mom and pop shops, as well as supporting other independent companies!
When you buy glasses from an independent eyewear company:
- You’re solely paying for the product and not the brand.
- Smaller brands must utilize quality and creativity to stand out, without relying on the name brand.
- Your purchase supports independent companies instead of large, publicly traded companies.
You may be aware (thanks to a certain 60 Minutes special) that one company – Luxottica, owns a large majority of the most well-known eyewear brands. By relying on the popularity of the brands it licenses (Prada, Versace, Oakley, Chanel, and many others), they are able to push products on consumers who identify with the lifestyle associated with the brands. In reality, all of the brands are made in-house by Luxottica and sold at Luxottica storefronts (Lenscrafters, Sunglass Hut) – so they are able to put a high sticker price on the product.
Product Quality & Authenticity
Independent labels have a different model. With no licensing costs or brand markups, they rely on the quality of the frames and the uniqueness of design to drive sales. This drives product quality and authenticity to levels unreachable by any corporation bent on maximizing shareholder profits.
Don’t use glasses as an accessory to hide who you are – but rather as an opportunity to highlight your unique personality and features. Do you want to look the same as everyone else? If so, shopping at chains and other online retailers carrying similar shapes, silhouettes, and colors may be your best bet. However, you won’t find our frame lines just anywhere, and they are made using premium, hardwearing materials that are comfortable, durable, and fashionable.
We absolutely love the independent eyewear lines that we carry, and we are always in search for new, unique lines. We love discovering eyewear brands that have a story – an authentic and genuine narrative. Next time you’re shopping for a new pair of glasses, let this South Austin optometrist help you discover the benefits of buying from an independent label.
